Hot Glass 101

Two hour introductory class introduces you to the fun of glass bead making. Learn how to safely work at the torch and make lots of great beads your first time This is the appetizer class for those curious to know what it's all about. Learn how glass melts, then shape and apply surface designs. Covered techniques include: how to work safely in a hot glass studio, shapes, stringer, frit, stripes, dots and bumps, and how to add pure silver to your glass. Supplies include two types of glass and a buffet of surface techniques. Glass beads, marbles and sculptures are annealed in a kiln for long life. Finished pieces may be picked up the following day. Advanced Borosilicate Glass

Three part workshop: part 1 tube implosions: an introduction to the world of tubing, using clear tubes and boro colors. Learn how tubing moves while creating advanced pendant designs. Part 2 hollow or tube bead. Take tubing to the next level. Experiment with new techniques, designs, and textures. Learn to work tubing for blowing and pulling shapes. Glass Casting

This comprehensive casting workshop covers how to make your own molds to create kiln cast glass art. Part 1: An introduction to the art of making molds, topics covered are: materials and techniques used to cast glass in the kiln, what types of objects can be cast, billets, how to avoid an undercut, and the different processes involved. Day one covers making a rubber mold, pouring wax, and wax manipulation. Part 2: Mix plaster silica mold compound, prepare for casting, color and types of glass used, and cold work demonstration. Students pick up their cast pieces the following week, and complete their project in the cold work shop. Cost for this class includes materials.

Hot Spot: Encased Florals

This workshop will have students making floral glass beads on a mandrel while learning tricks and techniques to encase them in clear or transparent Effetre, soft glass. The result is a floral bead with few or no bubbles and a very clear lens to create depth and intensify the design.

Hot Spot: Heart Pendants and Beads

This fun workshop will have you creating heart pendants off mandrel. Students learn how to attach a very good bail. We will also be making medium to large heart beads on a mandrel and will focus on form. All of the beads and pendants are made out of Effetre, soda lime, soft glass. Flameworking skills required. Anyone wanting to donate to Beads of Courage can make purple hearts with glass donated for this purpose.
